ABB's solution to strengthen Polish power transmission network

CTBR Staff Writer Published 16 February 2018

Swiss company ABB has been selected by Poland's national transmission system operator Polskie Sieci Elektronergetyczne (PSE) to provide its Ability Market Management System (MMS).

The software solution can support safer, reliable and efficient operation of PSE’s national power network and its interface within Europe’s energy market. This upgrade is part of Poland’s efforts to modernize its grid.

Presently, Poland’s transmission network is interconnected with most of its European neighbors. With these connections, Poland can participate in Europe’s electricity market.

But at the same time, the connections also expose the country’s national power system to the variable electricity flows between countries, which could result in power irregularities, disruptions and outages.

By implementing ABB’s MMS solution, the utility expects to integrate safely with European electricity network and at the same time better manage its domestic electricity market.

The software is claimed to help in balancing national electricity demand and supply in real time, while maximizing capacity usage of the country’s transmission network.

These capabilities help in ensuring greater energy security for the entire power supply chain and can facilitate for better energy exchange within Europe.

ABB’s head of Grid Automation business, within the company’s Power Grids division Massimo Danieli said: “We are pleased to build on our longstanding partnership with PSE SA with our latest ABB Ability Market Manager software solution.

“We look forward to continue supporting the digital transformation of Poland’s power network and bringing reliable power supply to millions, reinforcing our position as a partner of choice for enabling a stronger, smarter and greener grid.”

ABB has worked with PSE for several years in the past. It supported PSE in extending and modernizing the Polish power grid. The Swiss firm also has a major transformers manufacturing presence in Lodz with locally manufactured units contributing to the power infrastructure in the country.
